Gundars Bērziņš is a professor and holds a doctorate in management science (Dr. sc. admin.). The newly appointed rector of the University of Latvia (UL), he is a leading researcher and a corresponding member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
Bērziņš began his career at UL in 2000 as a lecturer at the Faculty of Business, Management, and Economics (FBME) and became the faculty's executive director in 2003. From 2008 to 2010, he served as director of the UL Department of Finance and Accounting. In 2010, he was appointed chancellor of the university. He followed a consecutive academic path to a professorship, which he attained in 2018.
Since 2016, Bērziņš has served as dean of UL FBME, a position he held until his election as rector. Since 2019, he has been president of the council at the Productivity Research Institute of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, known as "UL Think Tank LV PEAK." In 2024, he became a full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
